Filming is currently underway and we’ve already seen two trailers for the film but Jonah Hill, best known for his comedic turns in SUPERBAD and the recently released 21 JUMP STREET has landed a role in Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED.
Hill was previously eyed for a role in the film when casting first kicked off but was unable to sign on at the time due to scheduling conflicts. The role he will take on now is being kept under wraps but it’s not the same one he was in line for previously.
Written and directed by Tarantino, the film stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell, Laura Cayouette, M.C. Gainey, Don Johnson, Kerry Washington, Anthony LaPaglia, RZA, Tom Wopat, James Remar, James Russo and Todd Allen. The Weinstein Company has scheduled DJANGO UNCHAINED for release on December 25.
Hill, who received an Oscar nod for his performance in last year’s baseball drama MONEYBALL will next be seen in THE WATCH opposite Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. That film hits theaters on July 27. The actor also recently signed on to co-star in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film THE WOLF OF WALL STREET which re-teams the director with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Set in the South two years before the Civil War, DJANGO UNCHAINED stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive. Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.
Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival.
