The casting rumors for CATCHING FIRE, sequel to Lionsgate’s blockbuster THE HUNGER GAMES have been hitting the web at a rapid pace over the last several weeks with Philip Seymour Hoffman up for the role of Plutarch Heavensbee and Mia Wasikowska and model/actress Zoe Aggeliki in the mix for the role of Johanna Mason in the upcoming film. Well it looks like another actress has entered the fray for that latter role as Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Jena Malone (SUCKER PUNCH) is in the running for the pivotal role as well.
Johanna Mason, who in the second and third books becomes a strong ally with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) during the 75th Hunger Games after having a testy relationship with the former is described as a fierce competitor, who has no family and friends left in District 7 where she hails, with her weapon of choice being an axe. Director Francis Lawrence (WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, I AM LEGEND) is said to be keen on finding the right actress for the role with established talent as well as up and comers all being considered.
Filming is expected to begin on CATCHING FIRE this September with Lionsgate already scheduling the film for release on November 22, 2013. Malone began her acting career at 12 years old in the acclaimed Showtime movie BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA and as a young Jodie Foster in the sci-fi drama CONTACT. She most recently appeared in History Channel’s record-breaking mini HATFIELDS & MCCOYS.
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson). But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry… and the Capitol wants revenge!
