So I’m balls deep in some Silent Hill 2 last night, hour 8 or 9 by the in-game clock, when I realized something I had never realized before while playing this particular installment. Most fans of the series already know that the underlying themes and grotesque ideas at play in the Silent Hill universe are undoubtedly disturbing, not to mention downright EFFED up, but there is something much, much deeper (that’s right) at play in this game; an extremely subtle, yet blatantly obvious under-chord that pervades the entire experience. Thing is, I never saw it before, until last night…maybe it was the whiskey, maybe it was the lighting in the room (a candle and the glow of the TV), maybe it was the dead silence of my town at 12:30 in the morning…I’m not complaining.
Whatever it was, the mood was just right to get my mind right where it needed to be to begin to fully understand the “secret” of Silent Hill 2. Lemme say, it’s as brilliant as it is brutal; twisted and evil, just like Darth Vader. You get the distinct impression throughout the game that you are not playing it, but that it is playing you. Not many games can do this, but Silent Hill 2 just might hold the crown. I’ve heard the comparison many-a-time of Silent Hill Vs. Resident Evil, and while I am also a huge RE fan, Raccoon City holds not a single candle to Silent Hill. It’s apples and oranges really. Anyway, I’ll have the review up soon, and then it’s on to Silent Hill 3, Homecoming, Shattered Memories, and Downpour.
