Death is a depressingly inevitable consequence of life, but now scientists believe they may have found some light at the end of the tunnel. The largest ever medical study into near-death and out-of-body experiences has discovered that some awareness may continue even after the brain has shut down completely. Most people believe in a God of some sort, while others, like me, believe these is none. So what happens when we die? Do we ascend to a literal “heaven” or “paradise”, or do the lights simply go out, like a tree getting chopped down or a bug being squashed? Or is there more to it than that? Do we start over…a new life perhaps?
Reincarnation is the religious or philosophical concept that the soul or spirit, after biological death, can begin a new life in a new body. This doctrine is a central tenet of the Hindu religion. But do we really die and “start over” in a new body? Are we evolving on a path that eventually leads somewhere, and if so, where?
‘Parallel universes DO exist’, according to some. Subscribers to this theory say multiple versions of us are living in alternate worlds that interact with each other. They claim that parallel worlds constantly influence one another. This is because, instead of a collapse in which quantum particles ‘choose’ to occupy one state or another, they in fact occupy both, simultaneously. This theory could resolve some of the irregularities in quantum mechanics. It states some worlds are almost identical to ours, but most are different. These theories may even create the possibility of one day scientifically testing for these worlds! But is that even possible or just epic hogwash?
Did all humans originate at single point in Africa, or is there a more sinister reason as to “why we are here”? While most either claim intelligent design (God) or natural evolution, there are some that go even further, claiming that we humans are the product of an intelligent species that visited Earth long ago and genetically altered our ancestors, springboarding a bunch of wacky apes onto a roller coaster ride up the evolutionary corkscrew, from bananas to iPhones!
